He had a herniated disc which meant the gooey stuff that is inside the disc was bulging out and pressing on nerves in his lower back. The stuff in the jar is the gooey gunk they took out before they closed up the ruptured disc. Yes, I read up on all this when he had his surgery. I am a DT geek after all! :D

I really don't like that jacket he's wearing. It looks kinda skeezy to me. :-/
